Space Night: Asteroid Defense

How do we defend Earth if an asteroid is actually on a collision course? Join space physicist Stas Barabash for an evening about asteroids, close encounters and the technology that could become crucial to planetary defense. Using the spectacular flyby of asteroid Apophis as our starting point, we look ahead to 2029 – and to the real threats of the future.

On 13 April 2029, asteroid 99942 Apophis will pass just around 32,000 kilometres above Earth’s surface – closer than many satellites. This time, we know Earth is safe. But what happens the day an asteroid really is heading our way?

Together with space physicist Stas Barabash, we explore how scientists detect, track and study asteroids – and what options we have for changing their trajectory. Apophis’s unusually close flyby will also offer researchers a rare opportunity to observe how Earth’s gravity affects the asteroid’s shape, rotation and future path through the Solar System.
